Help! The betta my friend gave me won’t eat! What should I do?
Well, I fed it the normal food that it has been eating for a year, and it won’t eat! Then, I tried brine shrimp. HE STILL WOULDN’T EAT IT!!! Then, even though I know that bettas hate flakes, I fed him flakes just to see if he liked it, because that was all else that I had. Of course he never touched it. I know bloodworms would be good, but what should I do right now???? Why won’t he eat???!!!???

maybe he’s sick. Call petland and ask them what to do.

How long has it been? Betta’s don’t *need* to eat every day- you can feed them every other day, or even once every three days, as long as they get enough at each feeding (3 pellets or so if you’re using, for example, Hikari betta gold.) Give him some time, make sure the water quality is good and he has some “shelter” like a floating plant, fake or real. Try a little stress-coat or Melafix in the water, too.

My fish did that, I just left it alone and kept feeding it and I would stay there and watch it, but it wouldn’t eat. So then I would leave and come back, and the food would be half or fully gone. I asked the people that work at petco and they said Betta are shy fish.

Don’t panic! I love these little guys, but they are very different and tempermental, especially when they are new. If yours has been eating the same food for a year and suddently will not, it is SICK. Although bettas love new foods – you should really stay away from flakes and do dried worms – they just don’t stop eating unless there is a reason. Do you see any spots? Change in swimming? Laying or darting around? Swollen eyes or gills? Sometimes you won’t see anything and they just die. They live on average 1-3 years, so his time just might be up. Try another food, and buy some BettaFix Remedy for good measure. The gentle stuff won’t hurt him if he is healthy, but it just might save his life. CHANGE WATER REGULARLY!! these guys die from dirty water more often than anything else.

look i breed beta sooo…is it in a small bowl? is it is get it out they need to be in tanks that they can swim in or fat will gather around there heart much like a fat person and they will have a stroke. If that doesn’t work try getting it a mate if it is building a bubble nest.you seem to be doing a good job if you have had it for a year and are doing the right things food wise but try changing its surroundings or something it could just be (its going to sound weird) well depressed…the DO need to eat every day

Try these:
1) Change your betta’s water daily
2) Load him up and take him to petco to see what they say.
3) If they recomend any products, buy them and try them. If they recommend any actions, do them.
4) Feed sparingly
5) try moving him to a bigger tank or installing a filter to the one he is in.
6) Hope and pray.

bettas need variety in their diet. it also doesnt harm the betta to go a few days w/o eating. bloodworms are great, i dont think he will pass them up.

Go to an aquarium store (not Petco or Petsmart, an actual aquarium store that specializes in fish) and get some live Tubiflex Worms. Rinse them for about 5 minutes under cool running water (I use a brineshrimp net), then put a few in his tank, I have never seen a healthy betta refuse them.
Keep the worms in a small container with enough water to cover the worms, and rinse them, and change the water everyday.
