We really love our goldfish and want to make sure he’s as happy and healthy as he possibly can be. We’ve had him about 3 1/2 years during which time he’s at least tripled in size and is now about 4 inches long.
He’s just upgraded into a freshly cycled 60litre tank with his old substrate and ornaments. We feed him flakes once a day and some peas every now and then. Is this enough or should I try him with some of the bloodworms / brine shrimp my tropicals love?
He started out as one of three but all the others didn’t survive and he has proven to be a bit of a bully however I have read that goldfish do better with some company – should we get him a new tankmate or will this stress him out after being on this own for so long?
If anyone has any top tips I’d be grateful.
Thanks!
Not in that size tank, if you want him to continue to grow and be healthy its not really big enough for 2 goldfish. Fancy goldfish should be fed live daphnia weekly to maintain a healthy gut, peas are good too, and im glad to see you give him some of those. Be careful with dried foods as these can absorb fluid inside the fish and case him to float, soak all dried food for 20 mins is a good precaution. Live daphnia will also give him some good fun if you can get them,. i know they can be difficult to keep as ive had about 10 of them, the last too i sold on as they got too big. Sounds as if your doing a good job to me, di

I think he would do nicely with a tank mate. I would advise that his mate is probably the same breed as him, because this will make it easier for them to get adjusted. It is really good that he has a 60 liter tank, However, I would make sure that the tank is longer rather than taller. One of the tips I learned through years of caring for fish, Is that longer tanks provide more oxygen for the fish. Also, If your fish is overfed, The discarded food that would normally drift to the bottom of the tank will coat the bottom with a thinner layer of food, providing a better chance of your fish’s survival.
Also, This layout will provide a bigger area for you to decorate. I have learned that fantail’s really like floating plants and fake plants that provide a nice hiding area. I personally prefer the kind that suction cup to the side or bottom of the tank. You can also give him a nice log, or empty castle that provides cover. I personally like fake plants much better than live ones, and I am sure you have artificial plants in his aquarium, but I had to make my opinion clear
I am so happy that I found another person who loves fish. Some unworthy people simply buy the fish and forget about it, giving the fish a big chance of getting a disease. I had 2 guppies, and they both lived for about 2 years. I think guppies live longer than fantails, but I have rarely heard of a fantail living this long! You must be a great owner, Cheers.

Fancy goldfish need at least 20 gallons of water for each fish to grow properly. So your tank is too small for the one that you have right now never mind another one. They might live but they will not thrive and grow properly. They will have a rather short life, fancy goldfish can live to be over 30 years old. They are messy fish and need to have regular partial water changes. I like to change at least 25& of the water each week with dechlorinated water that is about the same temp.

Give him a bigger tank or even a pond, goldfish needs lots of room, not only because they get huge, but they are also extremely messy fish and produce a lot of ammonia. I would suggest over filtering any tank you keep goldfish in.
Also, switch him over to a high quality pellet food as pellets leave less waste than flakes and are generally better.
Goldfish will love blood worms, krill, brine shrimp, earthworms, pretty much anything. they’re cute little hogs.
They live up to 20-30 years if cared for properly.

60L is a little over 20 gallons…which is good for your goldfish at the moment. Since he is growing fast, he might soon need a pond…but I think you are doing a good job…The following site might be really helpful to you
