  1. Diet:
Red-eared sliders are omnivores, feeding on vegetation, insects, and small fish. They tend to be more carnivorous when young and tend to become more herbivorous as they age. Red-eared sliders do not produce saliva; therefore they must eat while in the water.

  2. You shouldn’t be feeding them live fish until they are older. THe fish will be too big for them and they could choke. Once they are older they you can put some live feeder goldfish in with them and they should eat them in one or two gulps. If they are big enough to eat fish there shouldn’t be a big fishy mess.

Also, you probably already know this, but you are going to need a massive tank upgrade soon. Red eared sliders get to be quite large and need a very large aquairum to house them. Some people even used baby pools for them.

    good luck

  3. Earth worms are good, also soft shelled insects are good, you can also try minnows they won’t be that measy if they aren’t much bigger than his head.

  4. Turtles are messy, period.

Babies tend to prefer bloodworms, small shrimp, krill, other small worms, etc. As far as fish go, try smaller things like guppies and young mollies.

The bloody mess you are envisioning does not really happen much in real life. It is really nowhere near that dramatic!

  5. don’t feed them with gold fish, you can buy feeder fish in a nearby store and look for the size that will satisfy your turtle. no need to worry about the small remnants of those fish, other feeder fish who are still in tanks would clean and eat those.
