They are shrimp. They are a type of shrimp that can lie dormant and dry in the egg until they come in contact with water, and then start hatching.
I raised them to adult hood to feed to my bettas.

Yes, they are brine shrimp. They are real. Had them when i was a kid. But they never looked like the picture in the ads. The king and queen sea monkeys never came to my house. Very disappointing to a child. I believed those ads. Dog gone it!

They are Brine Shrimp. When you buy them you are getting the eggs which hatch after a few days.

Sea-Monkeys® are a true miracle of nature. They exist in suspended animation inside their tiny eggs for many years. The instant-life crystals, in which the eggs are enclosed, preserve their viability and help to extend still further their un-hatched life span! Sea-Monkeys are real Time-Travelers asleep in biological time capsules for their strange journey into the future!
The joy of watching Sea-Monkeys grow offers a lot more than just pure fun. It is one of the outstanding educational experiences of a lifetime, because the entire life-cycle of these unique creatures are fully recreated. Conceived in 1960 as a biological novelty, the “fantasy” has transformed into brilliant reality.

Well, everyone has answered this question very well. I’ve had them and am fascinated by the way they can hatch from a powder too–another similiar creature is called Triops. They get a lot bigger than sea monkeys and are just as worth checking out! Now THOSE *ARE* strange things! Just make SURE to use bottled water, not tap water–or it WON’T work, and I speak from experience there too.

They are indeed real animals – brine shrimp. They aren’t terribly entertaining, but I had some in the past just to say I’d done it at least once.
