The purpose of this laboratory was to test a hypothesis relating to the fundamental niche of brine shrimp. We conducted our experiment and then had to generate two graphs (both fundamental niche and realized niche). We observed the “fitness” level and the way response stimuli of the shrimp acted under certain circumstances. We provided external stimuli such as light and temperature, which compromised its ecological niche. The behavioral responses these brine shrimp conducted were important in defining the characteristics of the species. Variations in behavior may confer fitness, for example when competition for survival or resources is extremely great.
This experiment allowed us to observe the behavior of the weak and the strong of the entire sample population of shrimp used. Comparing warm conditions with cold, light vs. dark, we observed how these brine shrimp responded.
This video will demonstrate our success and what we observed in the lab. Studying the table and data, proved that brine shrimp enjoyed environmental conditions of room-temperature water and living in the dark. This proves their habitat niche and allows us to gain a fairly strong hypothesis on the way they live and respond to certain circumstances.
