Sea monkeys – harmless fun or animal cruelty?

Most people will have come across sea monkeys, they’re little shrimp that are sold as toys or rather ‘starter pets’ for children. For less than £10 you can buy a small plastic tank, ‘food’ and sea monkey eggs, held in suspended animation, as it were, and you just add water to bring them to life.

Now i’ve always though this was pretty cool, and was just thinking of getting some today (they go well with the student lifestyle, cheap to buy and feed, don’t live long, small and non-offensive etc) when I stumbled accross an article saying they were a form of animal cruelty, kept in tanks far too small, no-where near their natural environment and they’re treated as a game, kids and parents alike not caring if they die, because they’re cheap and ‘toy-like’ in packaging.

Immediately afterwards I found this site http://www.langleystoys.com/acatalog/Sea_Monkeys.html?gclid=CMvhpKC1g5ICFQGIMAodIl2_3A which even has a tiny tank that can be worn on the wrist!

What do you think?

What’s the name of the fish you can grow from a packet of eggs? They’re not sea monkeys–I can’t find the name

I’ve seen them before… they grow in a little plastic tank set LIKE sea monkeys, but they’re supposed to be “prehistoric fish” in freeze dried eggs. I wanted to buy them and can’t think of what they’re called!

how do we clean our kids sea monkeys “tank” ?

MY 6 yr old daughter go them for her birthday…and believe or not they are real…buts its been a few months ..and their “plastic tank” is starting to look a bit scummey…can we clean this tank or is it time for the seamonkeys good run to end?
