I’ve always had fish over the years, especially bettas. I have always had a male and female in the various fish tanks over the years. But I never saw them breed (or at least I didn’t think I did). I bought this male betta 2 Mondays ago. My son named him “Swim”. Last Monday, (3 days ago) we put a female into the tank with him. They both started swimming around like crazy. Overnight, Swim built a bubble nest, and by morning Mrs. Swim had a fat belly. By that afternoon, 20 hours after first seeing each other, they mated. 24 hours after that, I spotted the first live fry. This isn’t quite the correct set up for proper breeding, but I think I can make it happen. I do have to get brine shrimp eggs to hatch live brine shrimp. Thing is, no pet shop in the Silver Spring area, a major metropolitan area, sells brine shrimp eggs. What a rap…

Here are the results of my betta spawn about two weeks ago. They range in different sizes. About 10 have died so far because they weren’t eating? Some just didn’t flourish. I think it’s because I confused them. I fed them both Atison betta starter food and vinegar eels to start off with. Then I fed them Walter worms 3 days later and a lot of them stayed at the top looking for their food. It wasn’t until I started feeding them brine shrimp that they started looking for food at the bottom of the tank. They eventually followed the brine shrimp down. Some shrimp swam down, some stayed at the top so it covered most of the fry.
