Please check out this video (sorry it’s a little dark):
We noticed them doing this this morning and we’re not sure what it is. Fighting, playing, mating? We think they are two males so we’re leaning towards fighting which is unfortunate. We put in some food to hopefully distract them from one another and they completely ignored the food (which they never do) even though it was good food – live brine shrimp. We’ve had five of these loaches for over a year now and have never seen this before.
If it is fighting then we will separate them, but we’d rather not unless we have to so we wanted to check.
Thanks in advance!
Some other info based on the first three responses:
The tank is a 14-gallon. It holds 3 mollies soon to be moved to another tank, 3 zodiac (aka batik) loaches, 6 bumblebee gobies, one smallish farlowella algae eater and an apple snail.
Until recently we had five zodiac loaches. We used to have all five in a 55 gallon tank (for about 14 months) but they were beginning to be a bit harassed by a Tiger Botia we also have in that tank. One day we noticed that one of the Zodiacs had died, so we moved the other four to the smaller tank.
Yesterday (three weeks after we moved them) we found one of the four belly up (a female), so we’re down to three. Then this morning we woke up and found the two males (or at least, I think they’re both male) going at it as you see in the video. There is indeed a third, and we’re pretty sure it’s a female because it’s got a nice round belly. The two males ignore her.
Water quality is good.
Do you think the “fighters” killed the female, too?
